VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) is a satellite communications system that serves maritime, home and business users.
Maritime VSATs require a stabilized antenna to track the satellite they are accessing to compensate for a vessels pitch, roll and yaw. Antenna sizes range from 39cm to 80cm and in broad terms, the larger the dish the larger the footprint (coverage area) the terminal is able to operate in. Larger dishes are also generally capable of faster data throughput.
Land VSATs require pointing; more sophisticated systems incorporate automatic pointing.
VSAT systems provide high speed, broadband satellite communications for Internet or private network communications. VSAT is ideal for vessels at sea, mining camps, satellite news gathering, emergency responders, oil & gas outposts or any application that requires a broadband Internet connection at a remote location.
VSAT is an excellent way to connect remote sites and workers with Internet communications for email, web access, video transmissions, VoIP telephone services, or other IP applications for field operations. VSAT enables you to expedite business processes by integrating field operations with a corporate wide area network.
Unlike other services we provide, VSAT is generally a more unlimited data service vs. an “on-demand” service like Inmarsat FleetOne or Fleet Broadband. The monthly and annual cost is greater, however where the application warrants, it is the most cost-effective means of communication.
